Berkeley College Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month


Berkeley College is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with Flor de Tierra: Homage to the Women of Juarez, works by Andrea Arroyo on exhibit at the Berkeley College Art Gallery, September 1-27, 2008.

In addition, the HOLA Club (Hispanic Organization Leading America) at Berkeley College's New York City Campus sponsored a number of events to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. The following events were held prior to September 15, 2008 to avoid conflicts with Summer Quarter final exams.

8/15/08 - In the Heights - Students and staff went to Broadway to see the Tony Award-winning play.

9/2/08 - La Hora Hispana (The Spanish Hour) en Berkeley - Professional Services Department Chair Marisol Abuin and HOLA Club President Lorena Byrd served as co-moderators of a panel of Berkeley College faculty and staff who shared their experiences on the topic Professional Achievement and Cultural Influences on Success. Director of Student Activities Conrad Walker served as host for the event.

9/9/08 - Hispanics Making a Difference in the Business World - In this motivational seminar, Professor Manuel Correa invited students to take a deep look inside themselves and discover the future that awaits students who use their backgrounds to achieve professional business goals.

9/10/08 - Hispanic Heritage Reception - The HOLA Club and the Student Government Association hosted a cultural event including readings from works by Pablo Neruda and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, musical performances by Johnny Colon and Billy Newman, and an artist's reception featuring Andrea Arroyo and her current exhibit at the Berkeley College Art Gallery, Flor de Tierra: Homage to the Women of Juarez.

9/15/08 - Reunion - HOLA Club and Hispanic Heritage Planning Committee gathered (w/cultural snacks) to review/evaluate programs to date and begin planning through 10/15/08.

9/29/08 - Fall Orientation at BB Kings - The HOLA Club, along with other clubs, will perform for new students.

Band leader Johnny Colon led a Latino/Hispanic Students Can workshop and discussion with HOLA Club members and posed with HOLA Club President Lorena Byrd, Personal Counseling Director Katherine Wu, and Berkeley students Hector Perez, Sergio Torres, Michael Persaud, Edwin Sandoz, Alba Lazala, Coral Brito and Jonas Rosario Lora.
